Hotels in Alleppey to Experience the Dreamy Backwaters

Sunny skies, balmy afternoons, coconut trees, shimmering backwaters, paddy fields, boats floating on canals โ€“ Kerala has all the makings of an unforgettable holiday. Godโ€™s own Country lives up to its name beautifully, in its unblemished beauty and the warmth of its people, who work hard and party even harder!

Located right at the heart of the quintessential Kerala experience is the captivating district of Alleppey. Familiar with those stunning Instagram travel posts on Kerala or postcards with images of a houseboat? Chances are they were all taken in the dreamy backwaters of Alleppey!

Take a cruise on a houseboat from Alleppey to Kumarakom. The houseboats used to ferry tourists are reworked versions of the old โ€˜Kettuvallamsโ€™ or boats that carried tons of rice and spices. The backwaters and canals have always been the lifeline of this district.

Today, these houseboats are floating hotels with cozily furnished rooms, toilets, kitchens, sometimes even balconies for fishing. Dine on delicious local cuisine, sip on some freshly-brewed toddy while taking in breathtaking views of the stunning Kerala countryside and the everyday lives of its people.

The annual Snake Boat race in the district is a fascinating sight. Come August, competing teams make spirited practice runs across the backwater canals in the days leading up to the main event. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamada Lake is one of the most popular races.

As tough as it may seem to leave the beauty of the backwaters, a visit further inland is highly recommended. Explore the 18th-century Krishnapuram Palace, 47 km from Alleppey. Built during the reign of the Travancore monarch, Marthanda Varma, the place is a fine example of typical architecture found in Kerala.

The famous Sri Krishna Temple 14 km away is worth a visit for its architectural style and the divine palpayasam or sweet milk porridge offered to the deity. 22 kilometers north of Alleppey, is the coastal town of Arthunkal. The famous St. Andrew's Basilica, an important Christian pilgrim center is located here.

Prepare to be enchanted at Pathiramanal, a charming island meaning 'Sands of Night.' Accessible only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma, this secluded island is a sanctuary for around 91 species of beautiful migratory birds!

Beach hop your way through this scenic district. Stroll down to the famous Alleppey Beach and walk down to its pier which is over 150 years old. To escape the crowds, make a quiet detour to the more secluded Thumpoly or Marari beaches.
